“To Flee” By Yasmina Aboufirass

War it is said,
Was the reason they fled.

Some fall like the hail
Some fall like the rain
Some fall on grass
Some fall on rock

Greeted by a head
The journalist said
With a loaf and some beans
It was enough it seems.

To the people they say
“Please treat them well,
A shelter to dwell
A westerners smile
They’ll surely be fine”

Under my breath
I said to the chiefs
“If money’s your life
Then I hope it will end,
To see that it ain’t
The penny you pry.
Up from your height
You play us like chess,
Where the land is a board
And death is a win”

At each other they glance
Suspiciously tense
What if the tears
Were camouflaged beards!

For those who still fear
The children they hear
The women they see
In their territory

They are like you
They are like me
And you are like them
And they are like you

And just as I caught
A glimpse of a thought
That seemed to make sense
Of what is a wrong
And what is a right.
It all seems to fade
In a confusing haze
Where
White seems to swim
In the vast sea of Black
And Black clearly leaked
Through what seemed to be white.
