TV Program : The Month of Ramadan and Food Islamic Ethics

Food is a central preoccupation for us all. Our very existence depends on the supply of safe, nutritious foods. Over recent years, crises and scandals related to food production (BSE, foot and mouth disease, bird flu…) the growing influence of agribusinesses and debates around the genetically modified food have led to an increasing demand for ethical consumption prompting urgent questions: Is the food we buy safe? Is it produced by methods that both respect the welfare of animals and that sustains the land? Are modern biotechnologies employed in food production immoral? Is the production of food now beyond our control? On the other hand, access to food has probably never been so unequal amongst the world’s population: while vast areas of the global south regularly suffer from malnutrition and famines, the great majority living in the West enjoy arguably unsustainable high standards of living. Will more industrialised farming substituting traditional methods ease this intensifying crisis?
