The Department of Religious Studies and the CCI will be delighted to host Prof Tariq Ramadan about: “RELIGIOUS ETHICS IN POST- SECULAR SOCIETY”

It seems important to discuss the very meaning of a secular society, what we understand in relation to a post-secular society, the relationship between the secular project and democratic principles and having said this, in light of what is happening today in the Middle East in Muslim-majority countries and also in the West, to ask ourselves what the role of religion could be. Whilst religion should not take over and impose onto the state its own logic with an authority coming from on high, it is nevertheless important to explore and identify ways in which religious references could play a role in the development of good governance for today. Here the religious reference could be religious ethics in politics and the way in which the religious ethics at different levels of governance could play a role in the state, our civil society and the development of relationships between individuals and our social communities.
I will be attempting to address these concepts here – the need to understand the state of affairs in relation to post-secular societies and reflecting upon religious references in ethical terms; reconnecting these two dimensions and looking at good governance and well-being in relation to our civil society.”
