The British-Swiss Chamber of Commerce in Geneva presents:
“Challenges facing contemporary Islam and the implications for business and commerce.”
It’s a cliché to say that business and commerce welcome stability and predictability. But that does not make it untrue.
In today’s closely linked, inter-connected world, some of the globe’s most prized natural resources are located in Islamic countries, some of which have either suffered great upheaval or oppressive regimes.
Compared with a generation ago, the profile of Islam and Moslems in European countries is much higher mainly due to immigration since the 1960s and 1970s.The UK, Switzerland, France and Germany are just four European countries which are notable examples.
And, no less important, many Islamic countries are Europe’s geographical neighbours.
How can we, as business people, better understand the trends and developments in contemporary Islam? Our Guest of Honour will address this important question.
Tariq Ramadan was born in Geneva. He is the grandson one of the founders of the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt. He holds a PhD in Arabic and Islamic studies from the University of Geneva.
He has lectured, among many other places, at the University of Fribourg; and since 2009 has been Professor of Contemporary Islamic Studies at Oxford University.
Time magazine has twice recognized Ramadan: first in 2000, naming him one of the world’s top 100 innovators of the 21st Century, and again, in 2004, as one of the world’s top 100 most influential intellectuals.
Prospect magazine in the U.K. voted him the 8th top most intellectual person in the world on the list of Top 100 Public Intellectuals.
He is both admired and criticised for his views.
