This Smile

I saw her crying.

From doubt, from  regret, from hurting and from  secrets.

I saw her disgusted

Of man’s stupidity, of their duplicity and of their lies.

I saw her smile

From tenderness, from affection, from their gazes..

I saw her lose herself and win, fall and get up.  She searched like everyone; she was hurting like everyone; doubting like everyone.  Like everyone and yet unlike anything. She made a career out of all the attractions, out of all  the repulsion, the career of playing the game of lies. The game of somber mirrors which reflect so many truths.

I saw her crying.

Of doubt, of remorse, of hurt and of secrets

I saw her revolted.

Of man’s stupidity, of their duplicity, of their lies.

I saw her smiling

From tenderness, from affection, from gentleness and from their gazes.

I saw her pray during times of joy and hurt.   Asserting her solitude and love. Speaking, telling stories, a dream, a future, another life, another career.  The pain was deep according to the game and locked protections.  An appearance which revealed all and nothing. In the heart of the long troubled nights, there was soundness deep down, a little light, a little life

I saw her crying.

From doubt, from remorse, from hurt and from secrets.

I saw her revolted.

From man’s stupidity, from their duplicity, and their lies.

I saw her smile.

From tenderness, from affection, from gentleness and from their gazes.

I saw her quest, her need for meaning and her disillusions. I crossed my own powerlessness. The proximity of a heart that opens and remains closed.  I entrusted to the Unique One about the meaning to my questions.  He replied me, once, at dawn:  of your silence will be born the light of your words.  I knew the way, I was unaware of the music.  From afar came the last one, the fifth meeting.  I listened, I heard.  From the deep recesses of my heart, her smile called me.

  1. “Have you not heard of the man who was digging in the earth roots and found a treasure?” (Khalil Giran)
I find my treasure everyday in the pleasure of watching my mothers smile, my siblings ripples of laughter, in my tearful smiles of joy when I talk to Him.

  2. Salam dear scholar and brother,
It seems that these free flows of a heart full of affection speak rather about some particular woman. By particular here I mean in quality, spirituality, uniqueness and difference from other women. The characteristics cited in This Smile would better fit a woman who undergoes a certain ordeal or hard times but the shining smile never abandons her face nevertheless. A woman surrounded by wolves trying their best to deprive her of her diverse rights, including the right to keep her body away from their devilish eyes, the right to virginity and the right to worship the One in freedom. A woman who has been subject to different scams tending to tarnish her dignity and send her centuries back in history to times of obsolete, ignorant and completely non-civilisational practices. Would that be a Palestinian woman or her Iraqi sister or a Muslim young girl in France, I can’t precisely say which, but all fit the framework I think.

    • people! to see mr. Tarik smiling is an extraordinary experience by itself … he can smile as well, d’ you all know? .. if only knowing that “ramadan” can heal, but would people committing damage to themselves believe that the word is a permanent cure, while they seem to have chosen as it was a mere poison? i wish mr. Tarik shall discuss jealousy and beyond all, that one, the most devastating one – the jealousy of Almighty … oh, remedy, remedy, has my poem jumped out of the global binary system? don’t speak of “god”, please, since it cannot compare, or it can, but compatible to an extent as the river Thames is compared if spoken in the Pharsi .. Allah may be recognized in details, dear mr. Tarik, “god” in selfishness – reconsider by whom your smile and gentleness is needed more and when your path shall be taken forward .. and thank you for “a light”, but i wish to and will return to there where we both were started: 11.500 b. C. – i see you by the help of Seth! Nietzsche was born on a 15th of October, so was my grandfather, and you, dear mr. Tarik, are envied and be glad wishing not to would make a life of another as others imagine that your life is a part of theirs .. in favour of all those coincidences that unify us all – be blessed in thy love! 26 26 26 … 16 16 16 … do those strangers know? 36 36 36 … as in heaven so on earth – do those strangers understand?

  6. Dr. Ramadan,

I saw you for the first time at Reviving the Islamic Spirit in Toronto, 2011. You were phenomenal and the topics you touched on was truly inspiring. Thanks for being there and sharing your knowledge. I am extremely thankful to Allah (SWT) for blessing me with the opportunity to be in the presence of you and all the other scholars. May Allah (SWT) give you all the joy, happiness and success. Keep up the good work you are doing for the Muslim umma’h. Take care ( loved how you covered that at RIS – extremely deep and truly meaningful)
