Contrary to the lady in the show I don’t have a problem with the idea that women with a headscarf have some special role to play. Since the headscarf is a requirement, and as women we do stand out and face the discussed difficulties, we better turn it into something positive.
Another thing. We should bring the concept of modesty (in behaviour and dress) back (I love the word modesty by the way. In Dutch we don’t have a word that contains its meaning so well. It would make explaining the headscarf a lot easier:-) Because what I see is young girls/ women who do wear the headscarf but are totally out of touch with the idea of modesty. To be honest, I find it more distressing to see a girl with a headscarf and a short skirt, smoking or publicly intimate with a boy, than to see a decent girl without a headscarf.
I agree that it is possible to look good and modest at the same time.
I wish muslims would duscuss the issue of hijab, modesty and female sexuality more profoundly. Then maybe we have something meaningful to say even to non-muslims. I find this a very interesting (and true!) take, not by a muslim but a christian women:
يعود انكسارالحضارة الإسلامية - حسب العديد من المؤرخين- إلى حوالي القرن الثالث عشر، والغزو المغولي. كانت الاضطرابات على طول حدود الإمبراطورية، وهشاشة السلطة، والهزائم...
When it comes to the headscarf bringing theology and practice together is urgent. This discussion is a good start.
