Title was Art and Islam, not Islamic Art. This show did not answer to the title, subject, and often in discussions we hear and talk about islamic art, but when it comes to relation between Islam and Art, we seem to have a problem. We deal with it by silence or by talking about calligraphy as Islamic Art. But getting actively involved in Art independently of categorizing it into western, islamic etc. is a challenge we need to take in today’s world of globalization, cultural exchange etc.
I think art can serve good purposes that aren´t necessarily religious. I can´t imagine arts that aren´t anti-islamic can be bad.
I have discovered some amazing Berber music. It makes me appreciate and learn about a rich language and culture I didn’t know enough of. The lyrics are beautiful and poetic. I can’t see anything wrong with this. Or am I mistaken?
I understand some contemporary music (and the videoclips) can’t be good for anything, but isn’t is about being critical and selective?
