Burning Cities: Lessons from the French uprisings for Europe and Britain today

A seminar organised by the UK Race & Europe Network

Speakers:
Professor Tariq Ramadan, Visiting Fellow, St Antony’s College, Oxford

Sarah Spencer, Commissioner, Commission for Racial Equality & Chair, Equality & Diversity Forum

Anna Visser , Policy Officer, European Network Against Racism

Joy Warmington, Chief Executive, Birmingham Race Action Partnership (b:RAP)

This public seminar brings together an impressive panel of experts on the topics of equality and cohesion in Europe and the UK today. Though the French uprisings have receded from British media headlines, issues hotly debated at the time and immediately afterwards continue to affect communities across Europe and are more than ever relevant to the UK situation.

With the seminar taking place at the outset of 2006, it will also be an opportunity to assess how the UK Presidency has performed in relation to matters of race equality and cohesion.

The seminar will also examine how issues faced by Muslim communities across Europe are similar and whether they can be approached from a European perspective.

Finally, the seminar will outline how the upcoming European Year Programmes might impact on the work of organisations working in the race equality field here in the UK:

 – 2006: European Year of Workers’ Mobility

 – 2007: European Year of Equal Opportunities for All

– 2008: European Year of Intercultural Dialogue
