THE QUEST FOR MEANING AND PLURALISM
Simon Fraser University’s Centre for the Comparative Study of Muslim Societies and Cultures (CCSMSC) kicked off its spring lecture series at the Segal School of Business on February 3, 2011
Every society has to find a balance between the individual and the group. Cohesion is necessary so people can work together; a certain amount of freedom is necessary so people won’t turn against the group, and to allow space for individual creativity etc. I think a solid group that finds the right balance allows for people to do great things because they are better able to work on common goals. One could say that pluralism reinforces the desintegration already caused by individualism in western societies. In this time of globalisation pluralism is a fact, but how can it – on a collective schale, I mean beyond an individual quest for meaning – have a positive outcome?
Salam Alaykoum,
